ARMEN FIRMAN (809-887 A.D.)
Armen Firman Engineering was named in honour of Abbas Ibn Firmas (Latinized as Armen Firman), the Andalusian engineer. History is full of legends and fables of men trying to fly, it was Ibn Firnas who built the first human carrying glider and is reputed to have strived two successful flights. His works led future engineers to define and invent some of the basics of rational aircraft design.
Abbas Ibn Firnas was born in Izn-Rand Onda Al-Andalus (today Ronda Spain) but lived in the Emirate of Cordoba which was one of the major centres of learning in the Muslim world. He was a polymath: an inventor, engineer, aviator, physician, and Arabic poet.
In recognition of the accomplishments of Abbas ibn Firnas, the Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature in 1976 named a moon crater ‘Ibn Firnas’ in his honour.
